Because the work looks small from outside and is enormous from inside. A typical commercial project has hundreds of door openings, each with its own hardware group. Each group has a SKU list. Each SKU has a finish code under the BHMA standard, a fire rating, and a dimension that has to match the leaf and frame. The architect publishes a hardware schedule. The General Contractor requires a Section 08 71 00 Door Hardware Submittal in a specific format. The senior estimator and the project manager then spend 20 plus hours per project cross referencing every opening against vendor catalogs, hunting for the right finish on the right model from the right manufacturer, and assembling the formal PDF. One missed SKU produces rework, project delays, and on the wrong project liquidated damages.
Then the architect changes the schedule. Or the GC's spec section gets revised. Or a long lead vendor pushes back on a finish. The submittal gets rebuilt. The same project gets resubmitted three or four times across its life. Multiply by every active project in the shop. The senior estimator who should be bidding the next project is instead inside an Excel file matching part numbers. The project manager who should be coordinating the field is instead inside a vendor catalog PDF. The leak is enormous and it is invisible until somebody puts a number on it.
June 2026 was the month that pattern broke. The 48 hour POC at a commercial door and hardware contractor on the central California coast took the entire workflow, from ProCore project ingest through compliant Section 08 71 00 PDF output, and made it the AI's job. The estimator's job is now verification. The project manager's job is now scope movement. The hours that used to go into hand assembly go into selling and shipping more projects.
